If we as marketers put all our focus on the merchandising and promoting of our “sellable stuff” like we are accustomed to doing, we are going to miss the subtle cues of what our audience wants from our company. When we are doing all the talking (pushing products and our solutions) WE AIN’T LISTENIN’ — we are talking at them.
From a branding and marketing standpoint, we used to engage in marketing with a campaign perspective of, “I have widget “X” and now I need to tell everyone about my widget.” News flash! This has changed. We can’t find success by speaking to our audience in generalities. We should treat them as if we were in a relationship. This means we will listen to their needs and respond accordingly.
